Public School System
Oakland-Craig Public School district is accredited by
the State of Nebraska and the North Central Association. The junior-senior
high school (built in 1950) has 26 classrooms with 226 students. Teacher/Pupil
ratio is 1 to 12. A $1.9 million elementary (K-6) school, media center,
high school-grade school commons, cafeteria, gymnasium, indoor walking
tract and instrumental music room was completed in 1984. There are 13
classrooms with 233 students with a teacher/pupil ratio of 1 to 19.

Special Schools
Region IV-NorthStar Services provides community based services
to people with developmental disabilities. The staff support and assist individuals
to reach their personal goals in a variety of life areas such as employment,
retirement activities, interpersonal relationships, community involvement,
home maintenance, finances, health and hygiene activities, recreational and
leisure activities. NorthStar Services also provides adult residential living
services in the community.

Community Education
Vocational courses are offered in home economics, agriculture,
industrial arts and business. The high school offers adult educational courses
in cooperation with the Northeast Community
College area.

LibraryThe Oakland Public Library, (402) 685-5113, was built in 1986 and is handicapped accessible, containing 19,000 volumes and an average annual circulation of 11,390. The library has a summer reading program for children, preschool story time, and two adult reading programs. Internet access is available to the public.
Churches
The Oakland area has six churches: Baptist, Evangelical Free, Lutheran (ELCA), Lutheran (Missouri Synod), Methodist and Salem Covenant. There are also three churches located within seven miles: Assembly of God, Catholic and Presbyterian.
Medical
The Oakland Memorial Hospital, (402) 685-5601, was built in 1950 with an addition in 1968 and an attached medical clinic completed in 1985. The hospital is a modern, well equipped, 23 acute/swing bed care facility. The hospital provides a full compliment of services including surgery, diagnostic x-ray, CT scan, stress testing, pulmonary and cardiac rehab, nutritional assessment and counseling, physical and occupational therapy, mobile units-echocardiogram/vascular doppler/mammography, gastroenterology, cardiology, ophthamology, ENT, oncology, orthopedics, pulmonology and podiatry.
Oakland, centrally located between Omaha and Sioux City, is served by three helicopter air ambulances. Oakland Memorial Hospital affiliated with Marian Health System of Sioux City Ia. in 1999.
The Oakland Rescue Squad and Ambulance is comprised of 17 certified Emergency Medical Technicians who receive 50 hours of training annually; eight EMTs are certified to operate the automatic defibrillator. The squad also has a 1990 rescue truck and a 1994 ambulance.
Oakland Heights, (402) 685-5683, built in 1974, is a nonprofit nursing home licensed by the State of Nebraska as a Nursing Facility. The 67-bed facility is owned and operated by the city of Oakland. Adult day care; physical, occupational, speech and audiology services; outpatient whirlpools; senior citizen and handicapped bus services; and meals on wheels are also available. A 1.5 million dollar addition for 22 assisted living units was completed in May 2000.
Burt-Washington Home Health Care, (402) 685-6358, is a Medicare Certified Hospice. Services include skilled nursing, home health aid, physical, speech and occupational therapy, and psychiatric nursing.
The Red Barn Veterinary Clinic and Pharmacy, P.C., (402) 685-5202, is
a full-service mixed animal practice located on the north end of Oakland.
The clinic offers excellent livestock working facilities as well as small
animal examination and small animal surgery facilities. Four veterinarians
also cover a large area ranging from Elkhorn, Nebraska, to north of Walthill,
Nebraska, making farm calls to provide patient care as well as preventative
health care consultations.
